A Local Brewer Comes Home as Devils Backbone Ramps Up Production Darden Graduate Also Added to the New Management Team Nelson County, VA – Devils Backbone Brewing Company today announced the addition of two new members to the management team: Nate Olewine, hired as Lead Brewer and Hayes Humphreys, hired as Chief Operating Officer for the Company’s new production facility in Lexington, VA. Nathan Olewine, a native of nearby Covington, VA, is well acquainted with Lexington’s historic roots and the surrounding area’s natural bounty. Olewine received a B.S. in Food Science from Virginia Tech and attended the Master Brewers Program at the University of California-Davis. He comes to Devils Backbone after more than four years with Victory Brewing Company in Downingtown, PA. “I’m excited with the opportunity to brew craft beer in both my home state,” said Olewine. “I left Virginia seven years ago and have been itching to get back ever since. I relish the opportunity to make Devils Backbone a cornerstone in the local community and throughout the Commonwealth.” Olewine will be primarily responsible for the day to day brewing operations at the company’s new production brewery, dubbed ‘The Outpost’. The new facility is currently under construction and is slated to open in January 2012. “I’m excited to see Nate, a native son of Virginia, return to his roots and use his talents to continue the tradition of Devils Backbone’s unique attention to the craft of brewing world class beers,” Steve Crandall, the CEO and part owner of Devils Backbone, said. Devils Backbone will be hosting a “Meet Nate” night at the brewery and restaurant on July 18th from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. for anyone interested in meeting the new brewer. Hayes Humphreys joins Devils Backbone after receiving his MBA from the Darden School of Business, where he studied marketing and entrepreneurship. He grew up in Brooklyn, NY, received his undergrad degree in accounting from Claremont McKenna College in southern California and spent the years before Darden in Washington DC. Despite being well traveled, Hayes is happy to be settling down in Charlottesville: “I’ve definitely fallen in love here, with the place, with the job and with a girl!” Hayes will be responsible for the business side of the brewery. “We’re a small operation, so my job description is fairly broad right now.” Devils Backbone Brewing Company, the World Beer Cup’s 2010 Champion Small Brewery, is a brewery and restaurant in Nelson County, Virginia, where good friends can get together for a great plate of food and a pint. The company was founded in 2008 and has since won 12 medals at the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup. Construction is underway on a 15,000 square foot production facility in Lexington, VA and the Company will be distributing to Virginia retail outlets in January, 2012.
