Local Virginia Brewery releases details on an 11th anniversary celebration!

Starr Hill Brewery to hold a private event at The Jefferson Theater

Virginia Eagle Distributing Company (VED) The local beverage wholesaler, with locations in Verona, Winchester, and Charlottesville is proud to announce that Virginia’s very own micro-brewery, Starr Hill, is celebrating their 11th anniversary of supplying “The Gift of Great Beer” to loyal customers throughout the state, as well as the entire East Coast.

“Starr Hill has been our best-selling local brand for years and I very happy to help support them in their past and future growth.  Their longevity is a testament to both the quality people at the brewery and the product they produce,” said Scott Heinz, COO, Virginia Eagle. “Smaller breweries don’t stay around for 11 years without understanding the business, the consumer and the relationship between the two.  Starr Hill gets it.”

Through a limited “invitation only” process, a select number of restaurateurs, store owners and beer enthusiasts will get the chance to celebrate the big day with Starr Hill.  Scheduled for 11/11/11, this event will be held at The Jefferson Theater, in downtown Charlottesville.  The night will include a walk down memory lane, as guests will be treated to a nostalgic photo gallery featuring the climb to prominence of the local brand, as well as a sampling of present day Starr Hill brews and a selection of past favorites brought out of retirement for this special night.  In true Starr Hill fashion, the party will also feature a live band, hors d-oeuvres and some special elements including a gift bag for each guest.  Each gift bag will feature commemorative apparel, a limited edition Anniversary Ale produced specifically for the lucky few quests in attendance and a chance to win the “Starr Hill Experience.”

“Spending my early career in Oregon and Colorado, I always dreamt of the day I would return to Charlottesville and share ‘The Gift of Great Beer.’  I was born and raised here and this is the place I have always called home.  I am very excited to celebrate this special day with the community that has supported my dream and look forward to many more years of sharing “The Gift of Great Beer,” stated Mark Thompson, Founder and Brewmaster.

Starr Hill Brewery History

In the Beginning

In the mid-90’s, Master Brewer Mark Thompson returned to his native Virginia from Portland, OR, having learned two things: First, that the craft of artisanal brewing was one part science and one part art; and second, that making delicious beer was a lot cooler than anything he had ever done as a biology student. After several years of apprenticing with other master brewers, Mark was ready to begin crafting beer using his own recipes.

Putting Down Roots

He found the perfect spot in Charlottesville, VA – a historic storefront on Main Street that was once home to the state of Virginia’s first craft brewing operation. In September 1999, Mark re-opened the doors and introduced the “Starr Hill” Brewery. Named after the local neighborhood, the brewery shared its historic building with the legendary Starr Hill Music Hall, and it was there that Mark’s delicious craft beers became a favorite to visiting beer lovers, musicians, and music fans from around the world. Fourteen prestigious awards later, Mark’s brews continue to be a hit at beer and music festivals nationwide.

Movin’ On Up

In 2005, in response to the growing demand, Mark moved from this small brewing operation to a larger brewing facility several miles outside of town, nestled in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Starr Hill’s house and seasonal brews are now enjoyed in restaurants and music clubs throughout the Mid Atlantic and Southeast, and are also available at many grocery and convenience stores in the region.

Starr Hill Brewery Accomplishments:

  • The brand has accumulated 16 medals from the Great American Beer Festival.  2011 medalist include Jomo (Gold), Monticello Reserve (Silver) and Smoke Out (Silver).
  • The brand has received World Beer Cup recognition twice, including a Silver medal in 2008 for their Dark Starr Stout and a Bronze medal in 2002 for their Amber Ale.
  • Dark Starr Stout has been the brands most awarded brew (5 GABF medals and a World Beer Cup medal) and is the most awarded Dry Stout in the country.
  • Due to extreme consumer demand, Northern Lights went from a seasonal brew to a year-round product and is the best-selling Virginia-made IPA in the country.
