From the Brewery

Pitch Black IPA is a Pacific Northwest tribute to the standard IPA style of beer.  A Gold medal winner at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival and a spinoff of traditional IPAs, Pitch Black is brewed using the emerging style guidelines of a Cascadian Dark Ale.  Pitch Black is brewed with generous amounts of hops and a modest amount of specialty debittered black malt to give it a very dark appearance, without the typical dark malt flavors.

This take on the new Black IPA/Cascadian Dark Ale style debuted in December 2009 as an experimental brew in the Widmer Brothers Brewmasters’ Release Series, commonly called the W’ Series.  Now, Pitch Black will be available year-round on draught and in four-packs at select retailers throughout the U.S.

“We are excited to expand the availability of Pitch black by adding it to our year-round portfolio of beers,” said Rob Widmer.  “The W’ Series highlights the immense talent and creativity of our brewing team and Pitch Black is no exception.  The response to Pitch Black’s regional, seasonal release left us with no question – this is a beer that we want to share with the nation.”

ABV: 6.5%
Style: India Pale Ale
Bitterness: 65 IBU
Plato: 16°
Malts: Two Row Pale, Caramel 10 L, Special Roast, Carafa Special II
Hops: Bittering: Alchemy, Aroma: Alchemy, Cascades, Dry Hop: Cascade T-45
Taste Profile: Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Complex, but not as hoppy as the aroma would suggest. The malts are a bit darker and more to the forefront than in a traditional IPA. There is a little sweetness, but the hops still make their presence known.
